Stalwart pair in trophy joy

THERE were plenty of celebratio­ns at Macclesfie­ld Golf Club as two club stalwarts pulled off club ‘major’ trophy wins for the first time.

Macclesfie­ld Captain Rod Price was in top form as the Macclesfie­ld Mature Gentlemen Golfers played their firstt Major Trophy of the new season for ‘ The Seniors Spring Cup and there was an excellent field of 73 who played on the day but Rod was untouchabl­e being the winner with 38 points to lift the coveted trophy for the first time at his beloved club.

Then Pat Burrows surpassed this as Macc ladies played for the Wyn Palin Salver.

Pat has been a regular player in the Macc ladies competitio­ns for many years but has never won a club ‘major’ trophy but on this occasion she posted the top score to win the trophy.

It was a tense finish with Pat winning a cpo on 29 points from Joyce Riley,

one more than Wendy Higgins.

The latest ladies competitio­n at Macc sponsored by Georgina Whalley was won by Jennie HineGlover who dropped her handicap by two shots as she led in from the consistent Joyce Riley and June Sumner with Lady Captain Myra Clark having the best gross.

A singles Stableford for Macc’s men was won by Roger Kirby with 27 points from David Sellars and James D’Arcy, both 36 and Kevin Barnshaw 35.

Medal action for Avro’s men had Neil Flood topping division one with 71, two shots clear of Peter Hale and Michael Thornber.

In division two Mark Brookes was a clear winner with 72, three less than Barney Connor.

Alderley Edge’smen played the first round of the Hospital Trophy and in a tight finish a cpo on 67 was won by Chris Brandon from Craig Aston, Michael Davies and Mike Harding.

It also needed a cpo on 77 to see Sue Kendrick into top spot from Julie Ricketts in a medal for Edge ladies with Olwen Davies a shot off the pace.

The first summer medal for Davenport’s men had the three divisions led in by Michael Hillier with 66, Tim Slinger after a cpo on 69 with Ian White and Winston Dudley-Brown after a cpo on 72 with Charles Parry and Anthony Chadwick.

Davenport ladies played a Stableford as their second Beswick qualifier and top of the divisions were Jackie Broderick 32 points, Pat Massey 37 and Rosemary Van Ross 33.

The monthly medal at Mottram Hall was won by Malcolm Hurrell with 70 from David Laird 73 and Andy Stubbens 74.

The ‘major’ Captain’s Bell medal at Prestbury was won by Josh Garside with a fine round of 72-1=71 after a cpo with David Murray with John Walker, Phil Reynolds, Simon Balam, Peter Mountford, Ross Clewley and Charles Bolam, all 72.

Prestbury ladies played a singles Stableford with Jean Duncan leading in division one with 35 points from Alex Forbes 34.

In division two Tracy McGregor was out on her own with 39 points from Gilly O’Neill and Alison Martin, both 35.

Shrigley Hall’s men played for the Golden medal and Charlie Wood went clickety click to lead in from Gary Wood 68 and Andrew Ellis 70.

A singles Stableford at Styal had division one topped by James Lowe with 38 points, two more than Mark Mynes and Andy Grundy and in division two William Geddis led in with 33 points two more than Brent Vose and cricket legend Dave Rice.

A Sunday Stableford at Styal saw junior star Ryan Owen out on his own with 39 points, three clear of Iain Scott and Hayden Cook.

Styal ladies played the latest round of the Summer Cup with Pat Chadwick first past the post with 18 points from Gayle Blackburn 17.
