108 steps up for top award
AN ART installation that transformed one of Macclesfield’s best known landmarks with ghostly images has been nominated for an award.
Matthew Rosier’s 108 Steps - at the location of the same name in the town centre - is up for the London Contemporary Art Prize.
It ran at the steps for three days last October and was described as an ‘atmospheric projectionmapped installation’.
Matthew had previously visited to film people coming and going - then projected the 20 minute loop of footage he created onto the steps at night to make the spooky installation.
Runners, dog walkers and litter pickers were among those featured in Matthew’s work and all signed their permission to be used in the footage.
He said: “I wanted to create a work that offered a glimpse into the contemporary identity of Macclesfield residents through the lens of a historic piece of infrastructure, the 108 Steps.
“The creation of the work relied on meeting people locally, both through the process of filming the steps and the research trips beforehand.
“It’s exciting that many of these people will now feature in the performance of the work.”
Winner of the London Contemporary Art (LCA) Prize will be announced at the LCA Gallery on September 12.
There is also a public vote category that 108 Steps is part of - to vote visit www.bit.ly/2YGg1xf before the September 1 deadline.
The 108 Steps project was commissioned by SHIFT/Cheshire East with support from Macclesfield’s Barnaby Festival.
