Major works which shut road to last until the end of next month

- ALEX SCAPENS

MAJOR improvement works that have currently shut a road in Macclesfield town centre are well underway - but expected to last until the end of March.

Work is currently taking place to improve Mill Lane junction with the first of two main phases closing Windmill Street completely until Friday, February 28, it is estimated.

This began at the start of the month and involve widening of Mill Lane, the relocation of gullies, sign replacement, kerb realignment and the creation of a pedestrian crossing.

During this period there is also a lane closure and lane narrowing on Mill Lane.

Then from March 1 to 22 there will be resurfacing and remarking of the carriageway with Mill

Lane closed on Sunday March 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 9am to 8pm.

Phase one took place over three days at the end of January, involving a drainage survey and also the relocation of a street light.

A spokesman for Cheshire East Council, which is behind the project, said: “We understand that there is no right time to undertake works on a busy junction.

“This work has been planned to try to minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and members of the travelling public. Delays are to be expected.

“Road and lane closures are necessary to protect the safety of both members of the public and our workforce whilst we complete the most complex aspects of the scheme.

“The work will improve pedestrian and road safety in the area. Signed diversions will be in place during the works.

“To minimise future visits and closures, whilst we’re here, we will also be undertaking maintenance activities.” Businesses are remaining open as usual throughout the works and access to properties will be maintained.”
