Vaccine team visit to see MP gets RESULTS A
CTIVISTS from the Macclesfield branch of advocacy group RESULTS have been lobbying for better medical supplies in developing countries.
Ricci Downard, Karen Downard and Jayanti Vaja travelled to Parliament to ask the government to support the Vaccine Alliance in its bid to replenish stocks.
The alliance, made up of governments, private organisations and charitable groups, negotiates down the price of vaccines, helps with their delivery and aids health systems in poor countries.
Members of RESULTS want the UK government to contribute £330m annually until 2025 to this work.
The team from Macclesfield met with MP David Rutley, who agreed to write with his support to the Secretary of State for International Development, AnneMarie Trevelyan.
Ricci said: “It (£330m) would be a lot of money to you or I but it’s only 2.3 per cent of the aid budget which is itself less than one per cent of the UK’s gross national income.
”And it would be expected to save 1.7 million children’s lives. “In fact, given that Macclesfield contributes 0.226 per cent of UK tax, we can say that Macclesfield’s contribution alone can be expected to save roughly 3,835 children’s lives over those five years.”
