MBBC’s show packing punch

- BOXING

MBBC recently held their annual boxing event in front of a packed crowd, with 16 bouts on display in what was a superb night of action.

Following on from last week’s initial report, Joe Straw against Thomas Roberts, who was another late replacement from Mealor ABC.

With 28 bouts worth of experience, the Macc coaches knew he was going to be game, and straight from the off Roberts went to work with a good engine on him.

He never stopped and this caused Straw some problems at first, but once he’d found his range he started catching Roberts with clean powerful shots.

Round one probably went Roberts’ way but round two and three were Straw’s as he turned it up and went to work himself in a great contest and it was another win for MBBC.

Bout 10 of the evening saw Louis Darricote of MBBC against Kian Wardle from Ashton Albion, who was another late stand in by taking the bout on the Thursday before the show.

Louis is another nice little boxer and this was evident from the start as he got the measure of Kian, who was another good kid but Louis’ work rate, accuracy and power was showing as the bout went on, so much so that the Ashton Albion coaches pulled their lad out after the second round.

Although Kian was game and wanted to carry on, his coaches could see he wasn’t going to win so retired him to fight another day, which looked to be a good move.

Bout 11 was Sam Coates of MBBC against M Smethurst from Halliwell ABC. This was another cracking bout and both were experienced lads.

Coates had great work rate and Smethurst was more of a boxer. The contest went back and forth with both boxers having success so when it went to a split decisions nobody was surprised, but tonight the judges had given the win to the Halliwell boxer.

Bout 12 was Jake Smallwood of MBBC vs. Archie Durham from Buxton ABC. This was another close contest with Jake looking on fire for the first half of each round, and then he would slow down and let Archie back in every time, so it made him look good at the end of each round.

Archie was a good kid and was consistent throughout and this proved to be the winning formula as he took the unanimous decision, and there was no arguments with the result as both kids did well, especially Smallwood.

Bout 13 was the only 3 by 3 minute round contest with MBBC’s most experienced kid Scott Attward, who is also a valued coach at the gym, was facing Stubby’s ABC’s Kriss Higham, who only took the bout at 1pm on the day as Scott’s previous opponent pulled out on the morning of the show.

Scott is a class act and not like your conventional amateur boxer, with more of a professional style. He’s light on his feet in and out throwing shots from angles, drawing shots and then countering with venom.

Kriss at 37-year-old was a man in comparison to 19-year-old old Scott, and having only had a few senior contests, this was set to be a test, but Scott didn’t disappoint and looked strong in round one.

In round two it wasn’t long before Kriss got his first standing eight count which was closely followed by a second. The corner told Scott to turn off the gas to get the rounds and round three was another cracking round but with Scott a bit more subdued.

It was a massive crowd pleaser and both boxers gave each other a massive hug, with Scott showing his appreciation for taking the bout by raising Kriss’ hand, but there was only one winner as Scott earned the unanimous win.

Bout 14 was Jordan Reed in his first senior bout against North Side boxer M Zamecnik. This was another great contest that went back and forth, with both boxers having their moments but Reed tired a little at the end of each round which may have gone against him, aas the decision was given to Zamecnik.

Bout 15 featured James Rowlinson of MBBC against Technique boxer John Gregory. This was a step up for James against a more experienced and older kid.

James likes to come forward with a low stance, throwing big bombs over the top, but Gregory was taller and tried to keep James at bay.

His aggressive fighting style takes some beating but the referee didn’t like it and instead of letting them get on with it, he kept intervening and spoiling the excitement for the fans and this gave Gregory an advantage as he managed to catch James more often which somehow swayed the judges as they gave the Technique boxer the win.

Bout 16 was Jake Hawcroft making his debut against Alessandra Staffa from Halliwell ABC. This guy looked ripped with muscles on top of muscles, but thankfully Jake was not bothered.

He was that excited to be in there and as soon as the bell went he didn’t mess about and went straight to work, throwing some quality shots that landed well.

Staffa was strong and sucked them up and threw some bombs of his own. Both boxers were having some success but Jake was loving it and as soon as he had found his range, he just built in confidence round after round and by the end had done more than enough to take the unanimous win in a a great end to an evening of fantastic boxing.

The MBBC coaches said: “All off this would not be possible without the support and faith of our sponsors who give donations every year to ensure that we can keep the club going for the next twelve months and for this we thank you sincerely.

“We salute our sponsors: Road Sweeper Services, LDF Plastering, Martin Window Cleaning Services, Roberts Electrical LTD, CWG Choices LTD, Lindow Lawn Turf, Ridgeway Scaffolding LTD, Rround Table, Sandstone, Beargrills Cafe, J Tape, and Mandarin House.”
