Eco-warrior urges kids to raise voices on climate change

- ALEX SCAPENS

AS CHOO L G I R L eco-warrior is urging other youngsters to join her and make their ‘powerful’ voices heard on climate change.

Maddie Goodwin, 11, a pupil at Marton and District Primary, has written to MP David Rutley, urging him to put pressure on the government to be more environmentally minded.

She is urging others to do the same and has even provided a templated letter for them to print out and sign.

Mum Katie Goodwin said: “She has always been passionate about fundraising and we were in London about a year ago and there was an Extinction Rebellion protest.

”We went along and something in it touched Maddie.

“She’s fully aware and can hold her own with any adult in a conversation about climate change. I’m immensely proud of her.”

Maddie, who lives in Eaton, has also influenced her little sister Isla, seven, to fundraise and be more environmentally aware.

They both did a sponsored climb of Snowdon and Maddie has also completed a triathlon and raised money for her school’s scheme to help youngsters in Uganda.

Maddie said: “There is nothing more powerful than a child’s voice.”

In it Maddie says: “It is important that the public make positive changes at home, but this will not be enough.

“Nothing will change until governments around the world introduce radical legislation, forcing corporations to significantly reduce carbon emissions, adopt greener working and production methods, and completely replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources.”
