Silkmen place all of players on furlough Just skeleton staff remain to keep the club running

- ALEX SCAPENS

MACCLESFIELD Town have placed their players and nearly all other staff on furlough leave.

The Silkmen have kept just a ‘skeleton’ office staff working at the Moss Rose so the club can continue to function.

The move makes Macc Town eligible for financial support from the government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS).

And it says that all affected employees will have their salaries made up to the full amount.

Concerns have been raised that the coronavirus crisis - and the resulting suspension of football - could finish off the cash-strapped club and it is hoped this move will safeguard its future.

A spokesman for the Silkmen said: “Macclesfield Town can confirm that we have placed all our players, backroom staff and the vast majority of office staff on furlough leave.

” This will unquestionably help to safeguard the roles of all those employed by the football club.

“Yet this isn’t to say that these uncharted times won’t present us with unique challenges which we will need to navigate.

“Like every single business out there, we are in many ways engulfed within the great unknown and have to react to what is thrown at us in the best way we can.

“We had to take steps to protect the long-term viability of the football club and furloughing provides us with tangible benefits in this respect.”

The club has thanked Chancellor Rishi Sunak for providing the CJRS money and staff who agreed to the furlough in a ‘positive and timely manner’.

Macc have not played since March 7, when they lost 3-0 at Plymouth Argyle. The spokesman added: “In order for the football club to continue operating during this period, skeleton staff will continue to be employed under the normal terms of their contracts. A further update will be provided in due course.”
