Tribute to Macc Town fan, 91, who died just days after wife

THE funeral service of a loving husband and wife who died within little more than a week of each other has been held.

Norman Cunningham, 91, passed away in hospital on Sunday, April 12, nine days after his wife May.

Their funeral took place at Macclesfie­ld Crematoriu­m on Monday, April 27.

Norman was a huge Macclesfie­ld Town fan having followed the Silkmen for more than seven decades The club will hold its own memorial at the Moss Rose once circumstan­ces allow.

A club spokesman paid tribute to him and said: “Norman was a devoted and much-loved member of our Silkmen family.

”He had stuck with his club throughout so many pivotal moments in our history and in doing so, made so many friends here at the Moss Rose.

”He was well-known as a very approachab­le, kind-hearted gentleman whose devotion to our club never wavered. Norman’s infectious smile and quick-witted personalit­y will be sorely missed.”

The family have said they will continue to buy Norman’s season ticket and donate it to a deserving supporter each year in his memory.

The spokesman added: “Words really don’t suffice in order to describe the generosity of this gesture and we will ensure that Norman will never, ever be forgotten here at the Moss Rose.

“He gave us a lifetime of support and in the hearts and minds of us all, he will always remain.

”Many of our supporters will have known May through Norman and our hearts go out to all their family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Earlier this month the club paid tribute to three other loyal and longstandi­ng fans.

Frank Rathbone, 99, a resident at Mount Hall Care Home, in Bollington, died on April 6.

And father and son Colin and Graham Barlow, 95 and 71, who had also followed the Silkmen for many years, passed away within a few days of each other.
