Captaincy role for Wilmslow fan Caroline
WILMSLOW Golf Club’s new Lady Captain Caroline McKeown loves her club where she has been a member for 17 years and is delighted to be in her new role at her beloved club.
Caroline said: “The Wilmslow Golf Club is a beautiful course with a fantastic layout and has been host to many major tournaments such as the Martini Open, won by Nick Faldo in a play-off with Jose-Maria Canizares along with many county, regional and international amateur events over the years.
“The inaugural Wilmslow Foursomes had attracted a superb entry of European Tour players such as Tommy Fleetwood, David Horsey and Matt Nixon as well as LET players, local professionals and top amateurs before being postponed by the Corona virus and hopefully will be played later in the year.
“Our course is playable all year round and we have seen a number of members from other clubs recently joining – as the membership list is still currently open.
“My favourite hole at Wilmslow is the 16th – a beautiful dog-leg right sweeping round a beautiful pond and I normally play it well!! My other favourite course is Skibo Castle in Scotland.
“My best handicap was 19, now 27 and I will be looking to play three times a week in the coming season along with my other hobbies of walking, fund raising, being an avid reader and supporting Manchester United and my chosen charity of the RNLI.
“My own golfing highlight was having a playing lesson with Solheim Cup Captain Micky Walker OBE at Wentworth.
“The people I would like to join me in a four-ball would be Sir Alex Ferguson, Julie Walters and Queen Victoria – Sir Alex is a hero, Julie would be great fun and the Queen, who was a patron of the R and A, would be very interesting!”
Sandiway Golf Club’s very active member Alison Green has been appointed as the first Welfare Officer for the Cheshire Ladies Golf association.
With a background in child protection and safeguarding, she hopes to bring that knowledge and experience to golf in Cheshire, supporting County training, competitions and inter-county matches and as a point of contact for Cheshire golf clubs for advice and guidance. Alison said: “Whilst golf clubs have had junior organisers supporting players as a matter of course, due to high profile cases which exposed a lack of due process in other sports around safeguarding, the governing body has set a series of requirements to ensure that safeguarding receives its proper attention across the sport.
“One of these requirements is that each golf club and each county must have a Welfare Officer, to act as an impartial contact in the event that any player, parent or indeed anyone reports an incident or has any concern about a player under 18 or adult at risk.
“I began golf at Sandiway 15 years ago and have been a member there ever since.
Along with friends from golf, I play at other clubs in Open competitions and at invitation of members of other clubs.
“I have represented Sandiway in shield matches and in the Daily Mail National Foursomes competition and my most recent accolade is that last year my partner and I won the Cheshire Senior Ladies Pairs BetterBall event at Wallasey Golf Club -on a rare day in sun and without wind- against stiff competition.
“I am currently treasurer for the ladies at Sandiway and also sit on the social committee.”
