Charity drive is out of this world

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

AVRO Golf Club, near Woodford, saw three of their stalwart senior members - The Vulcans - support and join their Captain Phil Normanton in the Longest Day Challenge to support his chosen charity for Macmillan Cancer Support and achieve their objective of playing 72 holes.

Philip said: “I chose Macmillan in memory of my father who was taken by pancreatic cancer 10 years ago, which is when I first came across the wonderful work carried out by the Macmillan nurses, who turned what is obviously a very difficult time into something much more positive and gave so much end of life care to my father as well as the rest of the immediate family.

“We began at 5am and completed our final round at about 8pm.

“We scored the best two Stableford points on each hole and scored 90, 90, 84 and 95, a respectable total of 359 points over the day.

“I would like to give a big thank you to my three partners, Peter Hale, Mark Hampshire and Nick Carter for the energy they put into this fundraising effort and the support team of Nikki, Gabby, Sue and Gill for keeping us all fuelled up and organised and getting more sponsorship on the day.

“I would also like to thank my caddies, Peter, Rod, Gill and Rod again for their assistance from start to finish – a tremendous team effort!

“At the moment, we have raised close to £4,000.

“However, the fundraising page is still open.

“There were many highlights, but the one standout moment was when Mark knocked his hybrid 170 yards to within 12 inches on the final hole of the day for a birdie four for five points!!!

“I would just like to say a big thank you to Avro golf club members, who allowed us freedom of the course, standing back when we needed to play through and also for all those members who came down to support us and keep our spirits from flagging.

“We are also naturally delighted with the contributions to our fundraising effort from the membership, as well as from the many family, friends and work colleagues, who have supported this worthwhile cause.”
