Organic firm’s rocket landing Down Under

- ALEX SCAPENS

AN ORGANIC business from Macclesfield is sending its equipment down under to help fuel a green revolution in Australia.

Tidy Planet, on Tytherington Business Park, has shipped its first rocket composter to the country and it will be used by a not-for-profit community farm.

The composter will be installed at Buckley Park Community Farm, in Fish Creek, Victoria, where it will divert 200 to 300kg of food and green waste from landfill per day.

Waste will be fed into the machine along with woodchip to make compost to be used in the onsite garden. Huw Crampton, Tidy Planet’s sales manager, said: “This represents our first ever composting project in Australia and we’re really excited about taking our technology to the other side of the world.

“The food waste management debate has been hotting up in Oz for a while – ever since the government launched the ‘National Food Waste Strategy’ in 2017.

“Composting can provide an effective way to reduce landfill and carbon emissions, at the same time.”

The deal for the A900 In-Vessel Composter was facilitated by Tidy Planet’s Australian distributor, Eco Guardians.

It will produce the fertilizer within two weeks with community groups collecting green waste, which is dried on site, to supply the machine.

The farm’s composting project is funded by the Victorian Government’s ‘Pick My Project’ community grants initiative. Marg Watson, a volunteer at Buckley Park Community Farm, said: “We’ve been operating for over three years now, and our ethos has always been that a community should be able to grow enough food to feed all those who live in it.”

David Berry, director of Eco Guardians, added: “The country is continuing to take action to halve annual food waste figures by 2030.

“We hope that by showing the positive environmental results composting can have on a localised scale, more businesses and municipalities across the land will see the benefits.”

The A900 Rocket Composter is expected to operate from next month.
