£15.5m funds to help centre in virus fight
FUNDING has been secured for a new Validation Centre of Excellence which will allow scientific testing to help the fight against Covid-19.
The centre, at Alderley Park, on the edge of Macclesfield, will be used to increase the UK’s diagnostic capability and capacity.
It will also deal with biomarkers and complex medicines as well as having a category three biosafety facility.
This will be used for testing of new developments to combat highly infectious pathogens, including respiratory viruses such as Covid-19.
The centre will be funded by part of £15.5m allocated to Cheshire from the Getting Building Fund.
Money is given to ‘shovel ready’ projects that will support economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
Craig Browne, deputy leader of Cheshire East Council, said: “The council is committed to supporting scientific research and innovation in Cheshire East, home to cutting-edge life science facilities that are internationally acclaimed.
“This investment recognises the significance of these leading projects and the fundamental role that Cheshire East can play in fighting life changing and life-threatening infections, including Covid19.”
Dr Kath Mackay, managing director of Bruntwood SciTech - Alderley Park, said: “It’s brilliant that Alderley Park has been recognised by the government for its world-leading facilities and scientific capabilities.
“This additional investment will help us to continue building our life science cluster at the park and will enable us to play a key role in stimulating economic growth within the region and UK.”
