Museum earns stripes with funding award

-

MACCLESFIELD’S contribution to the world of fashion will be better showcased after funding was won by the town’s museums.

Created and manufactured in the 1920s and 1930s Macclesfield Stripe was a blue, yellow and white pattern exported across the globe.

Macclesfield Museums display a number of items - including dresses and accessories - and have won the Textile Society’s Museum, Archive and Conservation Award

2020.

The funding from this will allow the exhibits to be repaired as well as storage to be improved.

There will also be research into the Macclesfield Stripe design, how it was produced and the stories behind it.

Nicky Brier, from Macclesfield Museums, said: “This important design was created and manufactured here in the 1920s -30s.

“It became an iconic design, unique to Macclesfield, which was highly sought after and sold all over the world.

“The museum houses a variety of examples of Macclesfield Stripe; from complete dresses, to accessories and flat textiles.

“Working with a conservator this exciting new project will help us preserve the collection for generations to come.” At the end of the project the results will displayed either at the Silk Museum or online depending on Covid regulations.

Museum staff also want to hear from members of the public if they have any memories or connections to the Macclesfield Stripe pattern.
