Golf clubs to get financial boost

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

THE Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs has been only too aware of how the Covid19 virus has impacted on member clubs in the Macclesfield region and have stepped in with financial boost to help them through these tough times.

CUGC President David Durling of Shrigley Hall GC was delighted to give some good news for the county’s clubs

David said: “For over 100 years the CUGC has sought to support its affiliated clubs and their members.

“From the 36 clubs that formed the CUGC in November 1920 to the 93 affiliated clubs that we have today, the Union has provided opportunities for those who show an aptitude for the game by arranging coaching and competitive matches as well as Championships and tournaments.

“Through our Life Member Days we have provided the opportunity to play golf throughout the county for those who enjoy golf but would not perhaps aspire to play for the county teams.

“We have been able to provide these opportunities through careful management of the Affiliation fees that clubs have forwarded to us on behalf of their members and over the years this has enabled the Union to build up reserves to ensure that we continue to offer this service whatever the financial services.

“As a result of an unprecedented year endured by all in 2020 the CUGC Board believes that the time is right to return some of these reserves to clubs, pro rata with the affiliation fees that they have paid for the last few years.

“Clubs will receive a cheque from the Union and whereas there are no strings attached to the process of returning these funds it is the hope of the Board that the clubs will decide to use the money to promote junior golf in whatever way they see fit.

“There will be families that, through no fault of their own, now find themselves in financial hardship and are unable to support the golfing ambitions of their children.

“If clubs can assist in helping those children to continue to play golf and perhaps attract more young people to take up the game, then I am sure that we will all benefit in the long run- but is still the club’s decision as to how these funds should used.

“On behalf of the CUGC I hope that the 2021 golfing year will turn out to be more enjoyable that the last 12 months and I wish every club success as we hopefully return to some form of normality.”
