Church cafe serves up climate change menu

-

A CHURCH has launched a ‘pay what you feel’ cafe in an effort to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change.

St Michael and All Angels Church in the market place in Macclesfield, has opened its ‘Angel at Your Table’ cafe, which serves food using ingredients donated by wholesalers and supermarkets via the FareShare charity.

Open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm, the cafe will offer a range of teas, coffees, cakes and biscuits, as well as main meals all freshly made on site.

Main meals could include roasted pepper and tomato pasta with chicken, sausage mash and beans, cheese toasties and cheese and chicken salad.

David Mayers, a member of the church, said: “All the food or 95 per cent of the food, is provided by an organisation called FareShare who recycle food from wholesalers and supermarkets that would otherwise be wasted, in landfill or incinerated.

“At the same time it’s really amazingly tasty. People can pay what they feel; we don’t have a set price that means people can get a cheap meal if they need it whereas others who can afford to can pay a bit more. So while enjoying the varied menu which changes every day you can take extra comfort from knowing that you are helping to reduce the amount of food wasted that would otherwise go into landfill or be incinerated, reducing carbon emissions and fighting global warming.”

The cafe is also open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am to noon with a simpler menu.
