Man sent to jail for revenge porn attack on his girlfriend

- ALEX SCAPENS

AMAN has been jailed after he blackmailed his own girlfriend for explicit images while also pretending to comfort her during the terrifying ordeal.

Liam Capper, 25, from Macclesfield, was imprisoned for three years at Chester Crown Court, but for his victim - who we are not naming - the shock and the trauma has yet to subside.

He sent threatening messages asking for sexual images of her, saying existing ones would be made public if she failed to comply.

And when the woman did not comply, this threat was ultimately carried out twice in revenge porn attacks.

Capper, of Princes Way, was jailed after admitting two counts of blackmail and two charges of revenge porn.

Following his sentencing his victim has bravely spoken out about her nightmare, which happened during 2020 as the couple’s relationship came to an end.

She says the two met at a friend’s house in late 2017 and entered a twoyear relationship in 2018, although the last 12 months was ‘off and on’.

“When I met him I thought he was really nice, he came across as thoughtful and trustworthy,” she said.

“He came across as the most genuine person you could ever wish to meet - in my head I thought this is the person I’m going to be with for quite a long time.”

But after 12 months the couple began drifting apart as they stopped having the same interests and they split in mid-2020, says the victim.

By then her Instagram account had been hacked and then the threatening messages had started and she did not know who was responsible.

She says police subsequently traced Capper through his IP address.

The victim said: ”He pretended to be supportive; it’s now hard to trust people and open up.

“When I was told it was Liam I was very, very shocked. I didn’t realise he would do that.

“But when I sat down and read through the messages it made sense with some of the things that were said and how they were said.

“It all added up, but I didn’t want to believe it at first.”

When the victim did not give in to requests for sexual images to be sent two explicit images featuring her were posted online.

She has now opened up about the effect this had on her to raise awareness of the impact revenge porn can have on its victims.

“The threats and messages made me physically sick to my stomach, I wouldn’t leave the house and I didn’t eat,” she said.

“It was constantly on my mind and it changed me as a person.

“In my head people had seen me - I wondered who had seen it and what did they think of me. I felt so self conscious.

“It ruined my life, my self-esteem went and I doubted myself - had I not given enough to him?

“Was I not pretty enough?

“I still don’t like myself and think what did I do wrong?”

The victim is now beginning to slowly piece her life back together, she is working part time and is in a relationship with a new boyfriend.

She said: “My boyfriend has supported me and been my rock when I’ve sat there pouring my heart out, he’s hugged me to sleep and said, ‘I’ll get through this with you’.

“I have a bit of confidence back.

“It’s tiny steps, I want to get back to my old self. She was fun, laughing all the time and going out with her friends - as I don’t have any now.

“I feel this is achievable with time.”
