Museum fashion show set to earn its stripes
ICONIC Macclesfield designs that are up to 100 years old can be discovered at the Silk Museum.
The attraction, on Park Lane, in the town centre, will unveil its new Macc Stripe exhibition at an opening event on Saturday, September 18.
It will take visitors behind the scenes of the Macclesfield Stripe collection, which dates back to the 1920s to 1940s and explain how this delicate clothing is being protected for future generations to see.
Despite being one of the town’s best-known designs the museum has been unable to display much from its collection.
This is because of its fragile nature with some potential exhibits damaged after years in storage.
But with help from the Textile Society and the Friends of the Silk Museum repairs have been made.
Conservator Zoe Lanceley and volunteers have been working on the costume collection through lockdown.
The exhibition is a celebration of their work so far and the first time in decades the museum can display a selection of this collection.
The opening event, from 10am to 4pm, will have live music – jazz band Annie’s Saints and Sinners in the morning and singer Molly Becker in the afternoon and art activities.
Curator Kathryn Warburton said: “Due to Covid we’ve had to close the doors to the general public, but despite this we have still been busy behind the scenes with projects like the Macclesfield Stripe.
“We want to share this work and progress through our new Macc Stripe exhibition. We hope visitors will help us uncover more human stories connected to the collection.”
