Double win weekend for young Austin

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

AUSTIN O’Connor, 11 years old and a pupil at Beech House School, is one of Macclesfield Golf Club’s top juniors and he enjoyed a great double weekend success with two big wins.

The first came in the Men’s Hovis Cup, which is one of the club’s top ‘major’ competitions.

He posted Austin managed to score a nett 65 to win the competition.

Unfortunately, club rules dictate that a junior can’t collect the trophy or have their name on the Men’s honours boards, but he did receive the first prize, and ultimately, he did win it, as he had the best score of the day, winning on a back nine count back!

Next day he won the Juniors President’s Shield on, with a nett 69 – to cap ‘A Double Winning Weekend’! As a result of his success his handicap was reduced by two shots from 17.5 to 15.5.
