Makeover puts park in pocket at bus station
AN OVERGROWN patch of land has been given a makeover to become a ‘pocket park’ for bus passengers to enjoy.
The formerly overgrown and derelict area, on the Mill Street approach to Macclesfield bus station, was cleared by Ansa, Cheshire East Council’s environmental company.
And now new paving and railings, plants, a tree and benches have been installed there.
The council, who funded the work, says it has tidied up an important gateway to the town centre and provided a more inviting waiting area.
Councillor Nick Mannion, chair of the economy and growth committee, said: “We are committed to the revitalisation of Macclesfield town centre and while we continue work on our more strategic Castle Street public realm scheme, this smaller project is a welcome improvement for the town centre.
“The site had been derelict for some time and was in much-need of a facelift.
“Projects such as these will help to drive forward a more positive future for the town.”
The scheme was carried out with support from Macclesfield Town Council and its town rangers will also help with the maintenance of the site.
Councillor Fiona Wilson, the town council’s regeneration champion, said: “At this challenging time, providing much-needed outdoor space for people to enjoy safely is vital for the future of our town centre.
“We have an ambitious strategy to increase civic and community pride by making our town centre an attractive and welcoming place and our ranger service is delivering improvements all over Macclesfield.
“Revitalising our town centre is also a key part of our economic recovery.”
Consultation on Cheshire East Council’s proposals for public realm improvements on Chestergate and Market Place runs until October 1.
