Easter visitors being urged to respect forest
ABUSY Easter period is expected in Macclesfield Forest and visitors have been asked to respect the land - and each other.
The long weekend and predictions of warmer weather mean the beauty spot is expected to see significant footfall.
The forest has seen problems since the start of the pandemic with people using unauthorised areas and causing damage.
Different groups that use the forest such as cyclists and walkers have also clashed with each other and local residents, too.
Ahead of Easter, United Utilities, which owns the land, has met with other members of the Macclesfield Forest Working Group such as the police, Cheshire East Council, and Peak District National Park.
They have drawn up an action plan which includes improved parking in busy periods, increased security presence and wildlife protection improvements.
In addition work has been done with user groups such as mountain bikers and on creating safe permitted zones.
Paula Steer, from United Utilities, said: “We have limited means to restrict visitor numbers, but we appreciate as we head into Easter holidays the community requires certainty that we are doing all we can.
“I would like to reassure local residents, that we continue to work closely with local stakeholders and have created a dedicated action plan.”
Macclesfield MP David Rutley was at the meeting.
He said: “We are fortunate to have Macclesfield Forest as a beautiful natural asset on our doorstep.
“It is vital that visitors not only enjoy all that the forest has to offer, but also show respect to the measures put in place to protect wildlife habitats.”
