By Vic Barlow House rule routine will help pet to feel secure

-

DOGS are creatures of routine. It enables them to learn and gives them security.

House training can be mastered very easily if you adopt a set routine, but not so easy if you are a shift worker whose timetable changes constantly.

Teaching a dog to walk to heel nicely is all about routine.

My dogs walk on my left-hand side.

I don’t swap to suit the traffic.

I keep them on my left at all times.

Dogs are not good with grey areas, they like certainty…either they are allowed to do something or they are not.

I had a lady owner who told me her dog was allowed to go upstairs, but only dirty.

I asked her how he was supposed to know and she quickly realised the flaw in that rule.

It helps a great deal if you have House Rules to which everyone adheres.

It makes dogs a lot more secure.

Keep your rules simple and make sure everyone in the house follows them and you will see the improvement in your dog’s behaviour.

Dogs have a fantastic body clock and will soon learn what happens and when.

Many professional kennels swap their feeding times around regularly so that all the dogs are not barking to be fed at the same time.

If you do not want your dog to jump up at the if he wasn’t kids don’t allow him to jump up at anyone.

He’s far more likely to understand than expecting him to differentiate between children and adults.

If you want to keep your carpet clean make sure your feeding times and your toilet times are consistent.

Dogs hate soiling their own space and will usually hold on as long as possible to go outside to relieve themselves, but they can’t do it if they never know when they will get the opportunity.

For puppies having fixed times is really important if you want to crack the House Training.
