More events lined up for club’s 175th anniversary
THIS year is the 175th anniversary of Macclesfield Cricket Club and they have organised a number of events to mark the occasion.
Underpinning the celebrations is a commemorative brochure which looks at the history of the club, including a review of the former Parkside Cricket Club.
It focusses on some of the characters who have graced the club over the years, including some of the Australians who have spent the summer at Victoria Rd, as well as a piece on the remarkable Moores family cricketing dynasty, and a look at the start of the Over 40s competition.
Recognition is given to the important role of the Academy in developing the cricketers of the future, as well as highlighting the rapidly increasing ladies and girls cricket teams.
Former captains Simon Ackerley and Barney Cutbill look back at the successful 1999 and 2007 seasons plus a few photographs from years gone by.
Copies cost £5 plus p&p and admin fee and can be ordered directly via https://neartail.com/gb/macclesfieldcc or email Macclesfieldcricketclub@hotmail.com
And to mark the celebration every visiting team is being presented with a commemorative pennant, a gesture that is going down well with the opponents.
The first event was the Vice Presidents and Sponsors lunch held on
June 11.
The lunch is an opportunity for the club to say thank you to all those supporters whose help is so valuable, indeed essential to the wellbeing of the club.
Local MP David Rutley called in to offer his support.
On June 17 the club had the benefit of a coaching session for the younger members of the Academy and the Ladies team from the Manchester Originals batter Laura Jackson.
Batting, bowling and fielding drills were set up and groups of players rotated through the stations whilst Laura gave advice and encouragement.
The hardest part of the evening for Laura was happily responding to the frequent requests for selfies and autographs!
A week later the club held its third ‘Big Coach’ when the club’s juniors get the benefit of coaching instruction from the senior players. Both grounds packed with youngsters being put through their paces, to the background of a DJ, is indeed a wonderful sight and testimony as to how the club has developed over 175 years!
The following evening local group the Screaming Beavers performed at the club, but were fortunately in a marquee as the heavens opened just before they came on stage!
The clouds cleared, heralded by a rainbow as a brilliant evening was held, enjoyed by all.
The final event of the weekend, which was blessed with fine weather, was an internal tournament featuring boys and girls of all ages.
The final event of the summer is on Thursday, August 11 when the club will play the MCC at Victoria Rd.
This will be an allday game commencing at 11.30am, ending at 6.30pm.
It is sure to be an entertaining days’ cricket with some good skills on show.
There will be a bbq and hog roast for spectators. Admission is free. Further detail visit www.macclesfield-playcricket.com
