Cheshire Cat grows stronger by the year

THE Cheshire Cat, which features two rounds of 36 holes each at Stockport and Wilmslow Golf Clubs, has attracted top players from across the country to play in it since it was reformed a few years ago.

The players play 36 holes at Stockport for the Stockport Salver on the first day then another 36 at Wilmslow for the Wilmslow Crow and the Cheshire Cat Trophy is won by the best aggregate score from the two events.

The Cheshire Cat goes from strength to strength and one of the organisers Reg Maddock (Wilmslow GC) outlined its success this year.

Reg said: “The event went very well and we received excellent feedback from all of the players.

“It was great to see Cheshire match-play and stroke-play champion Matt Dodd-Berry win the Wilmslow Crow, which was his last event in the

UK before he flies off to start his scholarshi­p in East Tennessee.

“It was also good to see past winners in the prizes as well - David Peel, Sam Prince, both Stockport, and Ian Kenwright, Haydock Park.

“We had the largest entry this year with over 100 applicatio­ns for only 66 places.

“The original ballot was done at -0.2, which is the lowest ever and we had one +6 handicappe­r and eight +5 handicappe­rs to make this the strongest field ever in the competitio­n.”

The first day saw the Stockport Salver won by Joel Smith (Stratford-onAvon) with 137 from Sam Prince 138 and Tom Hughes (Formby, Will Coxon (Carus Green) and Ed Dimambro (Gog and Magog) all 140.

Next day at Wilmslow it was even closer with Matt Dodd-Berry winning a cpo on 138 from Ed Dimambro and two shots back were Ian Kenwright, Will Coxon, David Peel. Alexander Walker (Rochdale) and Daniel Belch (Bolton)

Taking the Cheshire Cat was Ed Dimambro 278 from Will Coxon 280, David Peel 282, Ian Kenwright 284 and Matthew Dodd-Berry and Joel Smith, both 285.

It was club championsh­ip weekend at Avro and in round one Pater Hale set the pace with 63 from Steve Yule and Karl Needham, both 66.

John Isherwood was hot in round two with 63 from Peter Hale 66 and Peter Roles 69.

Peter Roles was a clear winner with 158 ahead of Phil Normanton 162 and Peter Hale 166.

Peter Hale also won the Mirrlees Trophy with a best nett of 18, eight less than Steve Yule.

It was sunshine all the way as Tytheringt­on held the Club Championsh­ip over two days.

Remy Miller triumphed with a combined gross score of 153 over 36 holes , with Sam Burton and Brigg Simpson both with 161. With a Handicap of +2.5 this was Remy’s second title, last won in 2017 having been Junior Club Champion six times previously!

William Almond-Smith carried off The Dorchester Cup with a nett combined score of 148

For a third consecutiv­e Year, Eileen Jones became Ladies Champion with a score over two rounds of 173. Claire Ebrey finishing second on 183.

The Dorchester Cup was won by Ewa Sidorczuk with a nett 146 over the two rounds

The profession­al’s Prize at Alderley Edge was won by Brian Foden with 43 from Steve Bennett and Drew Roberts, both 39 and Greg Wilmott 38.

Edge’s ladies played their Ping BB qualifier and A Roberts and L Smith led in with 52, well clear of Jo Pratt and A Martin 45.

Davenport ladies played a medal qualifier and topping the divisions were Gail Hegarty 68, Joy Dearnley 68 and Jocelyn Bowie 67 with the 9-hole winner being Hilary Kellett 22.

The club championsh­ip at Mottram Hall was played over two rounds and in round one the pace was set by Andy Scott 70 from Stuart Clarkson72 and Andy Gill 73.

Leading round two was Deborah Mawman with 71, one less than Andy Scott.

The winner and new champion with an aggregate of 142 was Andy Scott eight less than Andy Gill.

It was tight in the Rawsthorn Memorial Trophy at Prestbury with Alex Hughes winning a cpo on 70 from Gordon Tebay and Elliott Kirton.

A Three division Stableford at Prestbury saw the divisions led in by Ian Rennison 38, Steve Parton after a cpo on 35 with John Walker and Stuart Cresswell and David Smyth after a cpo on 37 with Derek Lownds and Mike Forbes.

Prestbury ladies were in ‘major’ action for the Maud Bason Foursomes medal and it was won by S Osbaldesto­n and J Hughes with 73.0 from J Bickerton and A Atherton 74.0 and the 9-hole Subsidiary medal was won by Elsa Andrew with 33.

A ladies Stableford at

Styal was won by Jenny Merren with 39 from Gayle Blackburn 38 and Anna Tunna 37.

Roger Hooley was incredible in a Styal Seniors Stableford posting 49 points to finish ahead of David Wrigley 45 and Michael Collier 43.

There was more hot scoring in a Seniors medal at Styal led in by Chris Hopkins with 54 from Paul Lawday 61 and Mel Mason 62.

The Wednesday Stableford at Styal was won by the familiar name of Kevin Doherty with 42, three clear of Joe Bradshaw.
