College to open four days a week
New scheme to save energy and help staff
AFOUR day week for students has been introduced at Macclesfield College with increasing energy costs partly to blame.
The college, whose main campus is on Park Lane, is now shut on Fridays as part of a pilot scheme.
It has described the move as ‘a new way of working and operational effectiveness model’ and says it will minimise the impact of rising energy costs and inflation.
Another factor, the college says, is to support staff mental wellbeing and flexible working patterns.
A spokesman said: “The new model and new way of working was approved by governors as a pilot for this academic year.
“The model includes the college operating Monday to Thursday face to face with students having full and focused timetables during this time.
“On a Friday students have the opportunity to complete independent study, volunteer at local organisations, complete work placements or have a part time job.
“We have listened to our
local employers and know this decision will provide our students with vital experience and gain the additional skills needed for their future study or employment, in addition to supporting workforces locally.”
The new model was first raised with governors in April this year.
The college is currently rated as good by Ofsted and is led by Rachel Kay, who is principal and chief executive.
According to a report by the government inspection body, published in November 2020, it had around 1,100 students.
The spokesman added: “The college remains
open on a Friday to some members of staff and a full safeguarding procedure is in place at all times for any students that require support.
“The model minimises the impact in relation to rise in energy costs and inflation. The new way of working supports the college in its mission to support mental wealth amongst staff, in addition to supporting staff recruitment and retention post Covid with a number of staff looking for flexible working patterns.
“As a pilot scheme, members of staff can be asked to return to the organisation on a Friday at any time.”
