Council to unveil plans for 20mph limit

-

PLANS to introduce a 20mph speed limit in parts of Macclesfield and the rest of Cheshire East will be published this week.

Campaigners have long fought to have the limit on roads in residential areas in towns and villages in the borough.

And the council will publish its latest speed management strategy draft - which includes a 20mph proposal - on Thursday, September 15.

This is ahead of a highways and transport committee meeting at Macclesfield Town Hall on September 22, when the strategy will either be passed or go back for further amendment.

David Mayers, from Macclesfield and part of the 20splenty group, said: “About half the population of the country live in places where most urban and village residential and shopping streets are or will soon be subject to 20mph speed limits.

“Residents enjoy the benefits of reduced speeds, more active travel, less pollution, fewer and less serious accidents, less fear of traffic by vulnerable road users, and a better community spirit.

“Lower speed limits benefit our physical and mental health, and reduce the strain on the NHS – and contribute to less car use and lower carbon emissions. But not in Cheshire East. Why not?”

The 20splenty group proposed speed limit plans in 2020 and these were taken up by Cheshire East Council.

Residents on Lark Hall Road, Lark Hall Crescent and Ecton Avenue have supported the campaign as they say their area is a hotspot.

But the group says that the resulting draft speed management strategy ‘made it almost impossible to get

significant areas of 20mph limits’ and was met with a lot of objections.

The draft unveiled this week is a revision version

and campaigners want a commitment to default 20mph limits rather than a ‘cumbersome’ street by street approach.

Members of the public can speak at the meeting but must book a slot at least three working days in advance.
