Social outcast now welcome everywhere

- By Vic Barlow

IWORKED with a spaniel last year that everyone thought was a pest. He was disrespectful and uncontrollable (not a great combination).

The family that owned him hated taking him on holiday because of the mayhem he created.

Relatives stopped calling round to the house because he jumped all over them.

Friends asked that they leave him at home when his owners paid a visit.

He wasn’t aggressive just downright disobedient and determined to get his own way.

I met them at my summer dog behaviour clinic and worked with him for far longer than I anticipated.

He had no manners, no respect and was used to getting his own way.

Within 40 minutes I had him walking nicely to heel and sitting and staying on command.

His owners thought it was magic but, of course, it was not.

He already knew the commands he just hadn’t been listening.

They joined one of my classes and worked on their leadership skills for a few weeks then moved home and I lost contact.

I bumped into them today walking through town and there he was trotting along happily to heel.

Best of all we stopped for a coffee outside Costa and this erstwhile renegade was as well-behaved as any dog could be.

Better still they told me the pub in their village invite them to bring him along whenever they book a table.

Seems he’s now on everyone’s welcome list.

I’m sure the transformation wasn’t easy and needed commitment and consistency but underneath that wild unruly dog no-one liked was a friendly little pooch waiting to be shown the way.

I’ve seen devil dogs turn into lovable pets many times but it’s hard to see this when your dog is driving everybody crazy.

This Sunday, September 18, I will be at Teggs Nose Country Park, Buxton Old Road, Macclesfield, with my dog behaviour clinic and for a £10 (cash) donation to a local animal charity I will work directly with your dog to resolve any behaviour issues she/he might have.

You can text me on 07590 560012 for a fixed appointment or just turn up on the day and I will see you ASAP. I will be there from 10 am until 2.30pm.
