Macc duo claim runners up spot

CREWE Golf Club were great hosts for the Cheshire Foursomes Championsh­ips providing a great course with plenty of challenges and perfect service in their splendid clubhouse with plenty of support from their friendly membership.

Crewe President Keith Appleton provided great support by seeing off the players from the first tee.

Cheshire Seniors Captain Gareth Bradley has been a serial winner in the championsh­ips for many years and enjoyed playing alongside Cheshire Team Captain Jon Beesley and their partners over 36 holes in perfect weather.

At the end of the day they tied on 147 in the gross competitio­n for the Prestwick Trophy.

But seven shots clear of them were the hot Delamere Forest duo of Richard Galley and Gordon Livingston who set the pace in round one with a leading score of 69 and kept up their momentum in round two with 71.

GC pair of Chris Massey and Haminder Matharu posted two rounds of 71 and were runners-up on 142, three less than Barry Challinor and Tom Winters.

The Victory Trophy for the best nett score of 137 came from Kieran Breeze and George Vasey (Sandbach), five less than Craig Gilligan and Alan Naylor (Alder Root)with Mike Wallwork and Mark Wardle one shot further back.

Cheshire President Martyn Grimley (Ringway GC) gave deserving thanks to all who had contribute­d to a great competitio­n and memorable day both on and off the course.

Back at Macclesfie­ld their ladies played over 36 holes and Hilary Elsworth was very consistent posting 146 to finish ahead of Fran Wilbraham 154 and Gill Evans 155.

The day winners were Julia Dunne 73 and Fran Wilbraham 76 and junior star Daisy Ward had the best gross of 191.

A Stableford for Macc ladies was won by Sarah Wild 38 from Rita Barton 36 and Jill Hunter-Blench 33.

The President’s prize for Macc’s men was a thriller with Ed Beckett winning a cpo on 66 from Derek Evans and Vin Thomas, just one less than Peter Hassall and Dave Hall.

There were two ninehole Stableford­s at Alderley Edge with Steve Bennett taking the first one after a cpo on 20 with Keith Doyle.

The second one was won by Alan Adams 18 from Ben Craven 16.

Edge’s ladies played their MDLGA Bunty Booth qualifier and Gwyneth Holt will represent the club next year as she led in with 42 from Alison Roberts and Liz Gardner both 38.

Avro ladies played for the AJ Trophy and Wendy Roberts was out on her own with 48 from Nikki Hale 43 and Sylvia Christelow 38.

The Senior Greenkeepe­rs Trophy at Avro was won by Peter Gudgeon 36, one more than Dave Kettlewell, David Hulley and Chris Hynes, all 35.

The Bill Jones Trophy medal at Davenport had the four divisions led in by Dave Waldron-Kelly 67,

Steve Lancashire 67, Peter Davies after a cpo on 67 with David Pettitt and Neil Healey after a cpo on 65 with Andrew Mitchell.

A midweek Stableford at Mottram Hall was led in by Andrew Brechin 40 from Brendan Poynts 38 and Eddie Gaffney 37.

A Singles medal at Mottram had scratch starMark Richardson leading in division one with the lowest gross and nett of 75 from Nigel Bown after a cpo, one less than Neil Duckworth.

In division two Peter Kelly was out on his own with 67 from Andrew Brechin 72 and Jason Harney73.

A Quad Am team Stableford at Prestbury had the fab four of C Adams, R Bradbury, P Allen and N Bridge lead in with 92 one clear of K Mairs, G Grieve, M Williams and K Harling.

A second Team of Four R&A Quaich had S Pooler, T McGregor and G and K Williams in firm control with 99 from D and N Rowley and P and K Wardle.

Prestbury ladies were in Stableford mode and in division one Helen Bolam led in with 40 from Michelle Pretty 38 and Gillian Singh and Elizabeth Thomas, both 37.

In division two Karen Keen led in with 38 from Margaret Wood 36 and Carol Hulme 35.

A Seniors Progressiv­e Stableford at Styal was won by D and A Murray and R Lynn with 81, three more than S Atherton, M Burchell and C Hopkins, J Stokoe, D Tomlinson and N Cowan and M O’Donovan and D Shlosberg.

A Wednesday Stableford at Styal had Joe Cartwright in firm control with 43 from Paul Sutherland and Lewis Window, both 36.

It was close in the Friday Frolics at Styal with Cole Brown winning a cpo on 22 from Derek Schofield, one more than Tony Woodfinden and Ian Sheldon.

Stableford action for Styal ladies had Debbie Reddish on top with 41 from Margaret Fiarhurst 39 and Judith Lacy and Mel Hill, both 37.

The 9-hole winner was Yee Lee 12 from Christine Buxton 11.
