Prestbury pipped in Bell Cup finale

THE Manchester and District Ladies Golf Associatio­n’s Bell Cup is the biggest of its kind in the region.

There were over 80 club teams in the competitio­n with thre seven top lady players in the club competing in the exiting match-play format.

Last year Walmersley won the trophy at Wilmslow Golf Club beating Leyland in the final.

The host club for finals day this year was Rossendale GC, the home club of MDLGA President Barbara Askew.

The Rossendale course looked superb with stunning views and thanks must go to the ground staff for all their hard work.

The hospitalit­y staff provided breakfast from 8.00 am and lunches for all players and officials throughout the morning all of which was appreciate­d by everyone present.

After the final and presentati­on the President had organised a buffet for the finalists, supporters, dignitarie­s and officials which was superb.

Sincere thanks must go to Andrew and his staff for looking after everyone so well throughout the day.

The morning semifinals were close affairs with holders Walmersley beating Shaw Hill 4/3 and Prestbury also had a close encounter with Saddlewort­h to also win 4/3.

The final was equally dramatic with the scores tied at 3-3 with Walmersley winning with the final putt of the day to retain the trophy and take it back the short distance down the road to their own club for another year.

Back at Prestbury their ladies played A Lady Captain’s Choice Team of Three Stableford and romping home with 93 were K Jordan, T McGregor and K Williams, six more than E Jones, A Cartmell and N Rowley.

A Ladies 9-hole Stableford at Prestbry was won by Adrienne Wood 20 from Jill Kimber 18.

Prestbury’s men played a Stableford in two divisions and top of division one with 37 was Martin Jackso, two more than Andrew Oakes and Stephen Best.

In division two Brian

Purves was top man with 40, two more than Tim Royle, Kenneth Mairs and Fred Bridge.

It was a close finish in the midweek Stableford at Avro with Karl Needham on top with 35, one more than Ivan Robertson, Roy Whalley, Phil Normanton, John Wetherell and Michael Thornber.

Avro ladies played a Stableford and the two divisions were won by Carol Lund 11 and Anne Cawood 19.

Macclesfie­ld ladies played for the 2000 Cup and Georgina Whalley led in division one with a super score of 70 from Gill Evans 73 and Nancy Barkworth 75- who won the nearest the pin prize.

Greeba Jones won division two with 72 and Kay Atkin had the best gross of 96 after a cpo with Judy Mutter.

Macc’s men played a Texas Scramble and the hot four of N Jackson, N Heathcote, P Eifflaende­r and L Wardle led in with 53.0 from P Tinkler, V Howlett, I Williams and B McGrouther 55.0.

The Jubilee Vase at Alderley Edge was won by Jonathan Donohue 37 one more than Simon Edburywith Steve Smith winning a cpo on 35 from four other players to clinch third place.

A Mixed 9-hole Stableford at Edge was won by Ron Ricketts after a cpo on 20 with Lorraine Purcell.

Davenport played an Assistan’t Pro’s Stableford in two sections and the 18-hole winners were P Pettitt, S Rowton, J Hall and L Bryceland with 82.

The 9-hole winners were D Rowland, L Southern, M Farrington and M Altringham 41.

The midweek medal at Mottram Hall saw Ju Van Der Wal out on his own with 70 six clear of Alex Johnson.

A Seniors Stableford at Styal saw Graham Swann fly to top spot with 45 from Mike Cuthbert 43 and Howard Dickson 42.

Styal seniors also played a their Championsh­ip medal and the proud winner was John Parr after winning a cpo on 64 from Duncan Mayall, three less than David Greenwood and Alan Townsend.

The latest Summer Cup qualifier for Styal ladies needed a cpo on 19 to take Judith Lacy into top spot

from Gayle Blackburn, two more than Sue Forster.

The new Junior Champion at Styal is George Barnes who led in with 70, two less than Charlie Weems and Jacob Thorp.

The Manchester and District Golf Alliance opened its busy winter season in style at the prestigiou­s Dunham Forest Golf Club with a full field enjoying a course in good condition backed by pleasant weather with superb clubhouse facilities and staff.

It was a very close competitio­n in all sections typified by the individual pro prize being shared on 37 points by Alliance stalwarts Craig Corrigan, Kris Andrews (Ashton-onMersey) and Grant Hamerton (Pike Fold).

The pro am section was led in by the old firm of Dave Green (Dukinfield) and Paul Crisp (Ashtonon-Mersey) with 44, just a point ahead of Craig Corrigan and Mark Riley

(Leigh) who won a cpo from Kris Andrews and club colleague Wes Reeves.

It was equally close in the am am section with sponsors’ representa­tives Andy Shaw and Peter Ford

(Ashton-under-Lyne) top of the shop with 43, one clear of Adam Jones and Terry Jackson (Ellesmere) who won a cpo from reigning Alliance Amateur Order of Merit champion Bob Barrow and his faithful

and supportive partner Phil Dearden.

The weekly nearest the pin prize, sponsored by Flixton duo Andy Bridgewood and Greg Norbury was won by Paul Woodcock (Alder Root).
