CAN’T GET OVER DEFEAT

-

LOCAL Conservatives just cannot get over the fact that they lost control of Cheshire East Council in May 2019.

They are now sinking to new lows by making political capital about an important report into children at risk of sexual and criminal exploitation.

The deputy chair of Macclesfield Conservatives in his letter (October 19) fails to mention that the joint targeted area inspection (JTAI) report of the multi-agency response to the criminal exploitation of children in Cheshire East covered the joint working of the police, the NHS and the council, not Cheshire East Council alone.

Curiously the deputy chair does not criticise his Conservative colleague, John Dwyer, who is the Police Commissioner for the area.

I am confident that Coun Corcoran and the council leadership will continue the improvement journey that has been ongoing since the children’s service was found to be ‘inadequate’ – the worst possible rating – when the Conservatives were in charge.

Perhaps the Conservative deputy chair of Macclesfield Conservative could ask John Dwyer what action he will take to rectify the failings of the Police identified in this report?

The personal attack on Coun Corcoran is yet another politically motivated one, ironically published at the time when the council was unanimously agreeing a ‘Debate not Hate’ motion condemning unpleasant personal attacks.

The comment ‘no-one voted for Coun Corcoran to be leader of Cheshire East’ is laughable given recent events and the imminent imposition by the Conservatives of another Prime Minister.

Macclesfield Conservatives were rejected in the May 2019 local elections – losing all the seats they previously held in Macclesfield.

Coun Corcoran then moved from leader of the opposition to council leader.

Since then the Labour Independent administration has outlasted three Prime Ministers - a level of stability that the Conservatives can only dream of!
