Nothing left to chance in Lily and Mia bouts

- BOXING KEVIN BRADBURY

MBBC travelled over to Stoke where Lily Firth was taking on Queensbury boxer Jess Hall, an opponent she had boxed in her first ever bout and was unfortunate in the decision going against her that time.

Lily was out to make amends having boxed three more times – twice in Ireland – since their last encounter in which she had come on leaps and bounds since then.

Bout six of the afternoon and it was clear that Jess had some support in the room so the instruction to Lily was leave nothing to chance, push through with the back hand and work throughout.

Round one and Lily soon got the measure of Jess and was doing as she had been told straight from the off – tap, tap, boom was the order of the day and she executed it with intent.

Round two and Lily stepped up a gear, looking strong. Jess was a good tidy boxer but Lily was pushing her back, not giving her time to settle and catching clean with some powerful shots.

Round three and it was clear that Jess was struggling with Lily’s southpaw stance and Lily was on fire, pushing on, throwing combinations without rest, constantly working.

As the final bell rang there was only one way this bout was going and that was a unanimous win for Lily Firth. Very proud of this girl, she boxed the best I’d seen her box, confident and strong wanting the win, still plenty to work on but we are on the right track well done Lily Firth you smashed it. ●●MIA King is one tough cookie and when a phone call came on Thursday afternoon saying “we’ve had some pull outs would Mia King be available to box on the Minster School show on Sunday afternoon” the answer came back “Yes.”

This wasn’t just round the corner but a four-hour round trip to Nottingham and out of our region.

But it’s so hard to get bouts for these girls you’ve got to grab them with both arms.

Donna Shaw the northwest regional female coach was on hand to stand the corner and after a struggle finding the venue we were all weighed in and ready to go.

Mia’s opponent was Morelli Price, who, like so many of Mia’s opponents, towered above her. This didn’t worry Mia.

Round one and again the instruction was, being away from home don’t leave anything to chance.

Mia went straight to work throwing combinations, Morelli didn’t seem to have any defence as most off Mia’s shots were hitting the target.

The Epic girl was clearly distressed and tearful as Mia landed a smashing backhand.

This was enough for the referee to call a stop to the bout in the first round as it was obviously out of her depth. It was a long way to go for less than a minute and a half but a win is a win and Mia had done as she was told and left the

judges no choice, a TKO in the first round.

This made the trip worthwhile and a happy car for the trip home. Well done Mia King and again big shout out to Donna Shaw for taking her with volunteer, mother and taxi driver Mellisa King! ●●JAKUB Wisniewski boxed Holmes Chapel kid Jim Price on the Holmes Chapel show.

It was a clash of two big lads, 80kg, and they were both game.

They touched gloves and went to war – this was a great bout Jakub was accurate and once he’d figured out his opponent was southpaw he started

to lead with his back hand and was catching at will.

Jakub pushed forward and never stopped working, Price was a strong lad but didn’t have the work rate and tired towards the end of the round, so round one had to be Jakub’s.

Round two and again Jakub kept the pressure on. Price was digging in and firing back and to be fair caught with some good shots, but the work was being put in by Jakub and again the second looked to be his .

Round three and these boxers were giving the crowd a bout to remember and proceeded to put on a cracking display.

Both lads were tiring and may be this round was Price’s as Jakub slowed up in the last thirty seconds.

But as the final bell rang surely Jakub had done enough? But it wasn’t to be as the compere registered a split decision in favour off the home fighter.

Gutted for Jakub but this is boxing – you can’t leave anything to chance. I’ve watched it back and still believe Jakub had done enough but we’ll come back stronger and fitter next time – great show and big shout out to Sean White and Ben Oliver for doing the corner.
