Hundreds pay tribute to town’s war dead
HUNDREDS of people honoured those who lost their lives in war as Remembrance events took place in Macclesfield.
A parade marched from the town hall to the cenotaph at Park Green, in the town centre, on Sunday morning.
There was then a service, a two-minute silence and wreath laying before the procession returned to the Market Place.
On Saturday there was an Armistice Day service outside the town hall.
Elsewhere there was a parade and service in Poynton as well as events in Bollington, Prestbury and Adlington.
Christ Church, on Bridge Street, Macclesfield, also held a com- memoration over the weekend.
Visitors could browse wartime archives, view the poppy display and find information about those whose name was on the war memorial.
And a wreath of poppies was laid at the Gateway of Remembrance at the former King’s School, in Macclesfield, to honour former pupils lost in both world wars.
The ceremony was led by members of the town’s Royal British Legion, with four standard bearers, and attended by the Mayor of Macclesfield Christopher Wilcock.
Pupils from Tytherington School were among those attending the Bollington event and they also held their own Remembrance ceremony at the school.
Teacher Karl Schofield produced a podcast around the theme of Remembrance for pupils to listen to.
Headteacher Manny Botwe, said: “We feel it is crucial that the school came together to commemorate and remember those whose bravery and sacrifice enable us to live a life of freedom.”
While pupils at Pott Shrigley Church School produced poppy-themed artwork that was then displayed at the nearby St Christopher’s Church.
