Market is in line for £1m revamp
MACCLESFIELD’S Indoor Market is set for a major refurbishment after Cheshire East Council received government funding.
It is believed that the amount invested in the market, which is located in the Grosvenor Centre, will be around £1m.
The council has revealed no specific details of what the work will involve but traders are aware of the refurbishment and have previously made a number of suggestions to help increase footfall.
These include the installation of a cash machine, improved signage visible from Churchill Way, market wifi and a seating area to eat food purchases. Another idea is for a scheme where the price of purchases is deducted from parking fees.
Funding will come from the Department of Levelling Up Housing and Communities Shared Prosperity Fund.
Cheshire East has received around £14m for projects across the borough.
Sam Corcoran, leader of the council, said: “This is very positive news for the whole borough, as projects will be delivered in towns and villages that haven’t always previously been able to benefit from central funding opportunities.
“The timescales for delivering the projects are tight but we will be ready and determined to support the teams and partners involved in them, to help these excellent projects
come to fruition.”
It is believed the work has to be completed by the end of 2024.
As reported in last week’s Macclesfield Express, a new public toilet has also been opened at the market, which is seen as a key to increasing footfall there and in the town centre.
