Award hat-trick for swimming Marvels
YOUNGSTERS who have conquered the English Channel have won a hat-trick of awards for their achievement.
A team of pupils from Beech Hall School, in Tytherington, swim from England to France in a relay every year and are named the Mencap Marvels.
And at a Channel Swimming Association ceremony they were presented with the award for the youngest relay team to complete the swim for a second year in a row.
They were also given the Susan Taylor award in recognition of the make up of the squad.
This included having a 12-year-old as the youngest swimmer, the first successful Lithuanian Channel swimmer and a member who was part of two relays in five days.
In addition the team also attended the annual Educate Awards, held at Liverpool Cathedral, where they claimed the WOW award for their efforts.
Money raised by the swimmers goes to charity Mencap and so far the total stands at more than £85,000.
Beech Hall headmaster James Allen said “We are incredibly proud of our Mencap Marvels for their remarkable achievements at these wards.
“They are a shining example of our values of kindness, respect, integrity and ambition.
“What makes these awards even more remarkable is that the money raised makes a significant impact on the
lives of those in need. Their selfless dedication to helping others is an inspiring example for
their peers and the wider community.”
So far seven teams have crossed the English Channel
in the last four years.
The school is considering a new challenge for next summer for those who have already swum the Channel with the Twenty Bridges swim in New York on the shortlist.
