- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

WILMSLOW Golf Club stalwart Guy Warburton has been involved in golf for over 40 years.

Apart from a few years away on business he has played a full part in organising many golfing activities and playing plenty of golf at his beloved club and in all parts of the world with his friends.

He had one of his most memorable golfing moments at a meeting in Costa in Holmes Chapel when he saw Ryder Cup hero Tommy Fleetwood and his young son Frankie calling in for a coffee.

Guy said: “I had to shake his hand and thank him for his stellar performance and a great weekend of raucous golf with Tommy winning the crucial half point to bring the trophy back across the pond.

“I asked him if he would mind me taking a selfie and he said it was no problem at all- he couldn’t have been a nicer chap and Frankie was very pleased to be on the picture with his dad and another ‘famous’ golfer!”

The Winter League and Sunday Stableford at Avro had Ian Hallworth leading in with a very solid 42 from Tim Bochenski 40 and Steve Yule and Steve Jackson, both 39.

The Manchester and District Golf Alliance is the biggest, with over 110 affiliated clubs, and one of the most active in the country providing a range of competitions during the year,

As well as their popular winter competitions they also run Inter Club Knock Outs throughout the summer months culminating in finals at the end of the season.

The Archie Preston Trophy for Mixed Pairs is very popular with a full entry, including all of our local teams and this year it was hosted by the 2022 winners Walmersley GC who were great hosts providing a scenic and challenging course.

The final provided a true derby match between Blackburn and Wilpshire and was a great battle going right to the death.

It is tradition that the respective Captain and Lady Captain lead out their teams in the first match and Blackburn’s Lee Sculpher and Wendy Wyke gave their team a flying start with a 3-2 win over their counterparts Brian Hindle and Fiona Bristow.

But Wilpshire showed their determination and fighting spirit as they stormed back in style.

Wins for Elizabeth Stebbings and Tom Riley 3/2, Mandy Williams and Paddy Dunne one up, Lynne and Ken Craven

3/2 and Ann and Mick Riley 4/2 took them out of reach with the other two games being conceded by Donna Hindle and Andy Bristow (Wilpshire) to Janet Ingham and Stuart Green and Heather and Phil Deans to Rachel Studdart and Stephen Matthew to see Wilpshire home by 4-3.

Alliance President Ian Brooks presented the trophy to the winning team and gave deserving thanks to all at Walmersley, Alliance officials and the players for making this a great day of Alliance golf played in terrific sporting spirit.
