AS WE approach the year end, we often reflect back on the past 12 months and look forward to the year ahead.
In 2023 the voters of Cheshire East showed their faith in Labour by electing 31 Labour councillors, an increase from the 25 we had previously.
In Macclesfield we retained all the seats we had and were pleased to welcome to our ranks, two Labour councillors elected in Bollington.
But due to the chronic mishandling of the economy by a succession of failed and failing Conservative Prime Ministers we have had to make some difficult decisions, as the council has to live within its means. Cheshire East has had a 63 per cent reduction in its funding from central government since 2010. Our priority is always to look after the most vulnerable in our communities, and we realise that some of the decisions we have taken have not been popular, but they have been necessary. In 2024 we will have to continue to make savings to balance our budget whilst continuing to provide services we know our residents want and need. But 2024 will also see a general election. I am delighted that Macclesfield Labour Party members have selected Tim Roca to be our candidate.
Tim was born and educated locally and has a home in Macclesfield with his partner, though he has recent experience as deputy leader of Westminster Council.
We will soon be knocking doors all over the constituency with Tim to hear your views and to let you know what a future Labour government will deliver.
Away from politics it has been great to watch some exciting matches this season at the Leasing. com Stadium in my ward.
Let’s hope 2024 sees another promotion for Macclesfield as well as a change of government at Westminster.
