You don’t have to be Einstein to run CEC

-

GOOD day to you my wonderful people. If you live or work in Crewe or Congleton, be joyful.

No… be more than joyful… be ecstatic. For you are the chosen ones.

According to Macclesfield resident Martin Smith, who lives in the centre of town Freedom of Information figures show council capital expenditure in Macclesfield from 2014 to 2023 was £26m while Congleton had £121m and Crewe was the recipient £141m.

That’s the problem with statistics they are difficult to ‘bend’ and 26 won’t become 141 no matter how hard you try.

Somehow you have to justify the difference and unless you are David Blaine or Dynamo it’s a bit of a stretch.

Worse still is once these figures are out of the bag you can’t change them.

You can try but you end up looking either desperate or daft.

Over the period in question we had Conservative representation up to 2019 so there is no point blaming the current council for all of it.

I don’t know how bad you think our Labour-led team is but I can assure you the Tory party administration they replaced was pretty dreadful.

At one point they had seven internal investigations going on simultaneously.

Councillors spent more time fighting each other than they did doing the work they were elected to carry out.

I doubt this appalling record will ever be surpassed. So don’t go running off to the Tories hoping for salvation.

Personally, I liked the idea of independent councillors and I still do. I believe the public are sick and tired of all this point scoring nonsense.

As for going back to smaller councils as we had previously at least the members had a better grasp of local problems.

Most of them lived in the local area, which helped greatly.

I don’t have a sure-fire plan of what works best what I do know is that Einstein said doing the same thing over and over again expecting a better result was an act of insanity.

He was a smart chap was Einstein.

I’m more inclined to believe him than I am those councillors who claim that when you close down a local ‘recycling centre’ it has no effect on fly-tipping.

Clearly, this was not a point of view expressed by Mr Einstein who, I believe, would have been ejected from the current council for not towing the party line.

What I can tell you for certain is that putting a council together of any persuasion is not easy, especially at a time when all kinds of abuse are hurled at you by anonymous cowards.

If you believe your view is worth hearing stand by your name as councillors have to do.

I have been around long enough to know that getting rid of a reasonable council is a lot easier than recruiting a better one.

Be sure to think before you leap.

I liked the idea of independent councillors and I still do. I believe the public are sick and tired of all this point scoring nonsense
