No team? No problem for soccer mom Ruth

-

AMUM whose son struggled to find a football team came up with the ideal solution - set up and mange her own.

Ruth Jackson set up Bollington Warriors under 12s for the 2023-24 season and her son Fynley is among the players.

The team is looking to raise funds ahead of next season and is appealing for help.

A raffle is being organised and the top prize is sponsorship where a company logo will be on the team’s training tops.

Although life as a rookie manager has been tough, Ruth says she is enjoying it with help from assistant manager Leanne Goodwin, whose son Alfie also plays.

She said: “It all started when my son couldn’t get onto a team with not having the experience and years behind him of football.

“It broke his heart after twice being rejected, all he wanted to do was have fun and play football.

“I knew I had to help so I created a team with no experience did all my

training and found 12 lads who also hadn’t been given fair opportunities in doing something they love. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my wingwoman Leanne, now seeing all the lads given an opportunity they wouldn’t have had makes it all worthwhile.”

Money raised will go towards kits and equipment and five businesses have already signed up.

Other prizes in the raffle include a meal voucher for two.

Ruth added: “I had a lot to learn in terms of coaching teenage boys, my goal was not to win games but to let the boys enjoy and develop their own skills.

“This season has been a test run for us but all the boys have stuck at it and I know moving into next season we will be more prepared.”
