Macclesfield members to clean up with new kit

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

MACCLESFIELD Golf Club is now the proud owner of a brand-new piece of kit, namely a Shoe Blower.

This has come about thanks to the enterprise of former Lady Captain Wendy Higgins and Mr Captain Peter Lloyd who made this their core project whilst in office.

This has been funded through numerous raffles and the sale of lake balls, which were donated by Senior members, with the club making up the difference, thanks also to a 200 club donation from past President Mike Baker.

Both Wendy and Peter were blown away by members’ generosity

For those not conversant with the golfing terminology a shoe blower is basically an air compressor which cleans the mud and grass of golfer’s shoes along with their trollies.

Life member Allan Stevens helped to maintain the old machine for years until parts became unobtainable thus inspiring Wendy and Peter to take action.

Now all golfers at Macclesfield can show off a clean pair of shoes for years to come.

Macclesfield ladies enjoyed some cold windy conditions in a Team Crash and in top spot with 45 were Jenny Moore and Jill Hunter-Blench from Gill Evans, Lindsay Speakman and Chris Gleaves 46.7 and Judy Mutter, Kath Brocklehurst and Carol Hyde 48.7.

A BB Stableford at Macc was close with T Brindley and B Pritchard winning a cpo on 46 from P Tomlinson and K Barnshaw, one clear of M Harboard and A Lamb and T Moore and R Jackson.

A Seniors Stableford at Avro had some good scoring led by John Wetherell 40 from James McKie 38 and Peter Hale 37.

It was even better in a Winter League Sunday Stableford with Andy Withington on top with 41 from Roy Whalley and Curtis Fisher, both 38.

A singles Stableford at Mottram Hall had division one topped by Joshua Hockenhull 42 from Simon Lowndes41 and David Deans and Michael Chrimes, both 38.

In division two Paul Johnson was a clear winner with 41 from Jon Corden 39 and Peter Kelly 36.

The sixth round of the Simister Cup at Alderley Edge was won by John Atkinson 39 from Steve Smith 38 and Steve Bennett and Paul Rowley, both 37.

Edge’s ever-busy ladies played a 9-hole Stableford with Yvonne Grundy first past the post with 20 from Lesley Fowler 18 and Fiona Anderson, Jean Walker and Sue Kendrick, all 17.

Styal seniors played a 15hole Stableford and top of the divisions were Stephen Atherton, after a cpo on 31 with Alan Carroll and Peter Booth after a cpo on 30 with Graham Jones.

The Friday 9-hole Frolics at Styal had Ian Ogden leading in with 17, one more than Lee Cullen.

The Saturday Stableford at Styal had Rob Metcalfe top of division one with 37, well clear of Steve James 34 and Simon Elms 33.

Andrew Barker was top of division two with 33 from Thomas Hankinson 32 and Dennis Chester 29.

Next day Steve James led in the 15-hole Stableford with 34 from Helen Billington32 and Graham Jones and Matt Bailey, both 27.

Local junior golfers have a great opportunity to play in an international tournament at Romiley Golf Club.

Melissa Clapham from Romiley said: “We are proud to have been chosen as a host venue one of this year’s Faldo Series , Faldo Futures events on Sunday 7th April, with tee times between 11:50 and 13:50.

“The event is for children between the ages of 7 and 12 (age on 1st Jan 2024) so if you have little ones of that age who are interested in golf, get them signed up on the link below. With finalists given the opportunity to play at the Belfry in August this is one not to miss.”
