Five juniors selected for their county

Five Cookham Running Club members gained selection for their county team last week after impressing at Berkshire Schools Championsh­ips in Newbury on Saturday.

Natalie Matthews ran strongly to finish sixth in the u13s girls race, with Olivia Carter not too far behind her in 24th place.

William Dart went one better to come fifth in the u13s boys’ race, while Jacqueline Heller impressed in finishing sixth in the junior girls race. Asmi Saha also ran well to finish in 12th, with Eva Bartlett, Grace Allan, Carys Allan and Siena Brancato all finishing inside the top 40.

Callum Bleazard was the first Cookham athlete home in the junior boys’ event, finishing 13th, just ahead of Charlie Shervell in 25th. Tom Ellington was 35th. Edin Isted finished 29th in the intermedia­te boys race while Ben Reynolds ran superbly to come seventh in the senior boys 7.2km race.

Heller, Saha, Bleazard and Reynolds, along with 14-year-old Frank McGrath, have been selected to represent their county at the South East Schools match in Essex on February 1.
