Burnham’s hopes hit by Shrivenham

Burnham FC: In-form Blues slip to sixth after surprise home defeat

-

Burnham’s hopes of a top four finish in their first year back in the Hellenic Premier Division were knocked back by Saturday’s surprise defeat to Shrivenham at The Gore.

The Blues came into the clash in fine form, having confidently turned over Brackley Town Saints (4-1) and Holmer Green (3-0) in their most recent league matches.

Shrivenham are one of their rivals for a top four finish, and started the day just a point behind their hosts, despite a poor run of form which saw them lose to Easingston Sports, Lydney Town and runaway league leaders Westfields.

However, that contrasting form counted for little on Saturday as Shone’s men fell to a 2-0 defeat, Tom Ballard and Ryan Stanners getting the game’s only goals for the visitors.

The outcome might have been very different had Burnham taken a first half penalty, but that chance was passed up in the first half and their hopes of a result went with it.

Shrivenham’s keeper Mike Alexander pulled off a superb save to keep the score all square before the break and the visitors took full advantage after the interval.

Burnham would have hoped to get back on track against Ardley United on Tuesday night, but that game was called off because of a frozen pitch.

The Blues, who’ve dropped to sixth in the table off the back of the result and the postponement, are due to get back to action at Easingston Sports on Tuesday evening.
