Magpies ‘still punch above their weight’

-

Maidenhead United continue to 'punch above their weight' in the National League, according to assistant boss Ryan Peters. But, just when you think they may be counted out, they rise from the canvas to deliver another stunning blow to one of their rivals.

Manager Alan Devonshire might have said that Saturday's game wasn't 'the be all and end all for their season', but had they been beaten by Eastleigh on their own patch the clouds that have been gathering over York Road would have appeared even gloomier and all but the most optimistic of observers would have feared they were set for the drop.

When they needed a confidence boost and a shot in the arm, the Magpies provided it with a 2-0 win over the Spitfires that once again drags them up the table and brings a host of clubs above them back into the relegation picture. Danny Whitehall netted both goals in the win, just as he did in the recent success against Wrexham.

Reflecting on their display, Peters said: “Brilliant. In the first half, we were on the front foot and took the game to them.

"Second half, we had to sit in and be hard to beat and we showed that.

"Another clean sheet. If we take out Tuesday’s game, that’s three clean sheets at home so it’s going well.”

"We punch way above our weight in this league and to be able to have a striker (Whitehall) who’s probably going to go on and hit 20 goals plus is amazing.

"The fact that we’ve been able to hang onto him just shows just how well we’re doing and he obviously values us and long may that continue.”

"We’ve got a really tough game against Solihull so we’ll have to assess (the players) again on Monday and just see where everyone else is," added Peters.

"And then we’ll find out if we will make changes or go with the same team again as today.”
