Courageous Chairboys denied by late Spurs rally in FA Cup fourth round

-

Wycombe 1, Tottenham Hotspur 4

A late flurry of goals dashed Wycombe Wanderers’ chance of progression in the FA Cup as opponents Tottenham Hotspur defeated Gareth Ainsworth’s spirited side 4-1, on Monday night.

Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Gareth Bale all featured for the Premier League outfit who were held at 1-1 by the Chairboys until the 86th minute.

At Adams Park, Spurs began the brighter of the two teams but were unable to capitalise after Bale headed Lucas Moura’s cross wide in the game’s early exchanges. Wycombe, who were last seen in competitive action 16 days ago, responded well as Admiral Muskwe saw his own header clawed off the goalline by Joe Hart.

Bale wasted another opportunity soon after, screwing a shot wide at the near post, and those misses proved costly as the hosts took the lead on the 25th minute. Down the right hand side, Uche Ikpeazu was able to evade Toby Alderweireld and whip in a cross that

Davinson Sanchez could only divert into the path of Fred Onyedinma to fire home. Ainsworth was forced into making an early substitution next with Darius Charles replacing Joe Jacobson through injury.

Spurs battled well and were able to end the half on level terms when Moura’s ball into the Wycombe box was flicked over Ryan Allsop and into the net by Bale on the second minute of stoppage time.

Jose Mourinho was forced into some tactical changes after the break with Heung-min Son and Tanguy Ndombele joining the fray. The fresh Tottenham legs piled the pressure on the Chairboys defence who were able to withstand their visitors’ advances until the game’s final 15 minutes.

Harry Winks was on hand to curl a rebound in on the 86th minute from Kane’s initial shot before Son slipped a ball through to Ndombele who made it 3-1 just one minute later. The French midfielder finished the game off in injury time as his deflected shot wrongfooted Allsop.

Tottenham will play Everton in the fifth round of the competition..
