MAC runners inspire and perspire in marathons
The 41st running of the London Marathon took place on Sunday, with 13 Maidenhead Athletic Club (MAC) members among the inspirational crowd of runners taking in the capital's sights and sounds.
In an event that continues to inspire, Jon Regan was the first MAC member to reach the finish on the Mall, completing the 26.2miles in just 2.50.19. He managed this despite 'hanging on' through a painful final six miles.
Maidenhead United Women's player Kirsty Matthews was also fleet footed around the capital, finishing her first ever marathon in 3.20.20.
James Fickling also impressed, finishing in a speedy 3.15.50.
MAC's Monique Deutschman hopes her first marathon will be the beginning of many 'happy running years'. She completed the course in 4.33.42.
Richard Davies admits he had 'unfinished business' as he took on the Chester Marathon with Martha Cross this weekend. Having put in some serious training for the event, he hoped to dip under 3.30, something he managed with time to spare (3.28) despite suffering from cramp in the closing stages. Martha also went under four hours to finish in 3.57.
As the elite runners were getting underway in the London Marathon a group of equally committed MAC members were limbering up in the Gossmore Recreation Ground for the Marlow 10. Five of them took on the 10mile course, with one opting for the shorter 10k course. Runners were taken through the woodland trails and hills of Quarry Wood, Winter Hill, Cookham Dean and Copas Turkey Farm.
Mark Smith finished 17th overall in 1.23.28, followed by Mike
Butcher (23rd in 1.25.55), Jon Oliver (24th in 1.25.55). Annie Sutton (88th) and Simon Goldfinch (95th in 1.47.42). Herve Bavazza took on the shorter distance, finishing in 58.23.
