‘We were second best and can have no complaints’

-

Ascot United manager Jamie Tompkins admitted his team were second best and had no complaints after the Yellamen fell to defeat against Windsor at the weekend.

Ascot went into the game on a formidable winning run spanning six matches but, to their surprise, found themselves 2-0 down at half-time.

In search of a goal to halve the deficit, Tompkins believes Ascot were dealt a crucial blow by Windsor’s third which crushed any chance of a comeback.

“There are no excuses from our point of view – they were the better team on the day,” he said.

“We’ve got to be gracious in defeat but we have also got to use this result as motivation.

“In terms of positives, there weren’t really many to take. When you lose a game, the positives will come from the next match.”

Adam Everiss scored his first competitive goal in Ascot colours, albeit a consolation as the side’s unbeaten run came to an end.

There was extra spice to the fixture as former Royalist James Harper lined up for Ascot.

Keaton August (suspension) and Tom Scott (injury) also made the move to play for the Yellamen after spells for Windsor but were absent from this clash.

Tompkins said: “James Harper was one of their players that they had just signed. After training with them, he didn’t enjoy it, he didn’t like the set up and asked to come over to us.”

Ascot’s next opponents are Wallingford Town in the FA Vase this Saturday.

Tompkins is aware of the threat that Wallingford will bring, who, despite playing in the league below Ascot, are unbeaten in 13 games in all competitions this season.

He said: “They will be confident they can beat us at their home ground. I feel like it’s going to be a really exciting cup game with hopefully a good crowd as well.”
