Marlow slip back to second after Basingstoke draw

-

The Marlow Men’s first team let slip a two-goal half-time lead as they were held to a 3-3 draw by an experienced Basingstoke side.

The result, coupled with a victory for Oxford Hawks, saw the 1sts drop points for the first time this season and slip from first to second in the table.

Callum White and Matt Bilsland netted from penalty corners to put the hosts two goals to the good, but Basingstoke responded well after the break scoring twice to make it 2-2 and grabbing a third in the dying minutes after Josh Morgans had restored Marlow’s advantage.

The men’s 2nd team gave a good account of themselves in a 3-1 defeat at Banbury on Saturday. The hosts took the lead against the run of play and Marlow missed several chances to get on level terms in the first half. The introduction of Pat Staal gave the visitors much needed impetus and he brought them level with a well-struck reserve shot into the bottom corner. But, as they pressed for victory, they were hit back two quick-fire goals from the hosts, the second of which was a scorching shot into the top corner.

The 3rds lost 6-2 at Oxford Hawks 4ths, the 4ths were held in a goalless stalemate with Staines 3rds and the 5ths lost 6-1 away at Eastcote 4ths. There were also defeats for the 6ths at Eastcote 6ths and the 7ths at South Berks 7ths.

Marlow Ladies 1sts were held to a goalless draw by Amersham & Chalfont, but the game was notable for an impressive display in midfield by Tilly Crampsie, who was named player of the match.

The 2nds continued their good form with a 3-0 away win at Phoenix & Ranelagh, while the other results were all positive. The 3rds defeated Reading 4ths 3-2 and the 4ths beat Banbury 2nds 4-0. The 5ths drew 2-2 with Maidenhead 4ths and the 6ths beat Newbury & Thatcham 4-0. The 7ths got the better of Staines 3rds 3-1.
