Manager admits Magpies weren't quite at the races

-

Alan Devonshire conceded Maidenhead United weren’t quite at the races at the Silverlake Stadium before insisting that the club’s recent wins over Wrexham and Woking has taken quite a lot out of the players.

Just the one goal, scored by Tyrone Barnett, thwarted the Magpies from picking up a third National League victory on the spin as Eastleigh ran out 1-0 winners on Saturday.

The Spitfires were worthy of the three points, according to boss Devonshire, with the visitors failing to create anything encouraging on the offence or akin to what has been shown in their previous games.

Their cause wasn’t aided through Josh Kelly’s absence from the starting line-up however, with the forward taking a place on the bench after a bout of illness. He was though well enough to be used as a second half substitute.

“We got beat and deservedly so,” Devonshire said before adding, “There isn’t a lot to say really –

I’m disappointed with how we didn’t create a lot.

“They got a goal with about half an hour played or so, and we didn’t really give a good account of ourselves after. That was frustrating – especially considering we had scored three goals in each of our games before.

“It was a fair result to them. We didn’t have a good day at the office, and I think the recent two games have taken a lot out of us. “Josh was ill.

“The boy has worked very hard for us recently, and it was touchand-go for him before kick-off.

“He’s okay now but it was sensible for him to be used as a substitute.

“But listen, we’ve got to just roll our sleeves up now, forget about this game, and move onto the next one.”
