This little piggy stayed at home

- Vanessa Woolley

Those of you who may have read my previous columns written close to Christmas will no doubt know that I suffer from a self-inflicted Christmas disorganisation panic disorder.

I always vow that this year is THE year I will be organised.

My home will be a zen paradise of calm and glitter, right down to the dog’s Christmas outfit.

But somehow my plans and lists get lost in the everyday hubbub of a busy life and before I know it, it’s mid-December and I am panic buying.

This year, however, I decided to not make a list.

Just go with the flow.

So, you can imagine how I felt when I heard about the food shortages of some essential Christmas items, namely turkeys and pigs in blankets.

This forced me to reconsider my decision and I joined many hundreds of others in a mad rush for Christmas goodies.

I even managed to acquire two packets of pigs in blankets to shove in the freezer. Result.

But being part of this chain reaction panic buying got me thinking.

There really is enough food to go around. More than enough.

It’s just the choice that might be restricted.

We may only have three options to choose from instead of five, or 10.

All that really matters is that we are together.

For many of us last year’s Christmas was different, we were without family members, our Christmas crackers silent on the dining table as we peered at each other through Zoom.

This year it will be better.

We will be able to be together. Just quite possibly without the pigs in blankets.

Have a lovely Christmas.
