Peters: There’s plenty of work to do on the defence

- Maidenhead United FC

Assistant boss Ryan Peters admits the Magpies have plenty of work to do on the defensive side of their game after conceding four at home to Dagenham & Rebdridge on Saturday.

The Magpies have struggled to keep clean sheets all season and as such leave themselves with too much to do from an attacking sense.

In last week’s FA Cup tie at FC Halifax Town they scored four goals away from home, which should be enough to win a game of football, however, they conceded seven and those same defensive inadequacies were evident again at York Road on Saturday.

For the first half hour, Peters felt the Magpies looked bright and lively, and the game may well have turned out differently had they taken one of their chances.

But unfortunately, they didn’t, and Angelo Balanta completed a hat-trick as the Daggers secured a comfortable away win.

Prior to kick off no side had scored more goals than Dagenham this season, and it’s no disgrace to lose at home to a team in such form and confidence, but Peters was still frustrated by the way the Magpies succumbed to defeat.

Once the first goal went in, the Magpies defence looked vulnerable, and in pressing for a way

back into the game, they left themselves too exposed in defence. They did manage to get one goal, through Josh Kelly, but the visitors were able to raise their game when needed and clinically took their chances.

Speaking after the final whistle to media officer Grace Scott, Peters said: “I’m frustrated, again.

“It’s strange because up until 30 minutes it was probably one of our best performances.

“We were solid, compact, and were creating chances for fun.

“A defensive mistake led to the first goal and the floodgates opened.

“It was two basic errors that led to their goals [in the first half] – it wasn’t like they carved us open.

“There is a lot of work to be done defensively.”

Peters added: “This is the first game in a while – if we take out the FA Cup game – the scoreline has been as heavy as it is.

“So, we need to go back and reflect but we’re not going to ease off the gas.

“We’re going to try and get ourselves right as quick as we can.”

It’s now three matches without a win in all competitions for Maidenhead, and they’ll be hoping to cut short that run at second placed Boreham Wood on Saturday. It won’t be easy, however, Boreham have lost just twice all season and have won nine of their 15 league matches.”
