Magpies can't wait for return to competitive action

Maidenhead United Women

Maidenhead United Women return to competitive action this weekend when they welcome Larkhall Athletic to York Road following a string of frustrating postponements.

The Magpies haven't played in a month after county cup opponents Milton United withdrew from the competition and the FAWNL cancelled their league fixture at Buckland Athletic.

Manager Ryan Taylor arranged a friendly match with Fulham last weekend in the hope the team could find their rhythm once again, but that also bit the dust due to COVID issues at the London club.

Sunday's crucial looking match with Larkhall kicks off at 2pm.

Defender Gemma Bloor has played in seven of the side's nine matches this season and performed well in their most recent 1-0 defeat to

Swindon Town.

The Magpies more than played their part in the contest, and carved out some good chances, but they didn't get the rub of the green and conceded late on.

Despite this frustration, and their lack of recent game time, Bloor and her teammates have been busy on the training ground as they look to kickstart their season.

“It’s been good,” she said. “We haven’t had a game for a while but are continuing to train and work on things that we need to develop as a team.

“We’re always working hard in training to improve our shape and defending as a team but in my opinion there’s always things we can improve on.”

The former Woodley player, who is now in her fifth season with the Magpies, ended the game against Swindon in goal after an unfortunate injury to goalkeeper Lola Pollard, and she once again proved her versatility.

She added: “It’s hard to believe but I played as a striker for a season when I played for Maidenhead Boys and Girls,” she said. “I’ve also played in goal in lots of tournaments.”

Taylor will be hoping to employ Bloor in her more favoured defensive position on Sunday when Maidenhead have an opportunity to leapfrog their opponents in the table. Admission for this key game will be £3 adults and £2 concessions, cash only.
