Kane hopes stalemate can be a ‘stepping stone’

-

Kane Ferdinand hopes Maidenhead United can use Tuesday's 1-1 draw at Southend United as a steppingstone to better results and performances.

Ferdinand fired home the Magpies' equaliser midway through the second half as they claimed their first positive result since their 3-2 victory over Wrexham at York Road on October 26.

Since then, they've lost four times in the league and been dumped out of the FA Cup by FC Halifax Town, but this was much, much better, both defensively and offensively.

The Magpies restricted their hosts to a handful of chances and looked the more likely side to find a winner as the game wore on. It was a big improvement on recent weeks, which saw the Magpies concede a worrying 19 goals in just five matches.

Afterwards, United's goalscorer Ferdinand told Maidenhead's media officer, Grace Scott, he hoped the result would spark an improved run of form.

“The first half was even,” he said.

“I thought we were unlucky to go in behind.

“Second half I thought we were on top, and we could have had more goals, but all-in-all a point is a good result.

“We’d been conceding quite a bit and we’re upset with the goal we conceded tonight.

“But we limited their chances, and we feel we had more shots on target than them.

“At half-time we said, look, stay calm, we’re still in the game, and we were unlucky to concede that, and we knew we could go again and we did.

“I thought we were pressing high up, we kept them penned in and could have got more than one as I said.”

Ferdinand made 61 appearances for the Shrimpers between 201012, scoring 10 times, so it was nice for him to find the net against his former club.

“It was good. Good to get on the scoresheet at any time and it was good feeling,” he said.

“I think we can use it as a steppingstone.

“We've got a home game on Saturday coming up and we've still got a game in hand so hopefully we can start climbing the league. We have to start making our home games count.”

The first of those is at home to eighth placed Solihull Moors on Saturday, 3pm kick-off.
